The City of Ely Bowls Club has for many years been one of the most successful sports clubs in the region.

Located in Nutholt Lane in the heart of the city the club was originally founded in 1925 with an outdoor green of only four rinks and a disused railway carriage as a pavilion. The first president of the club was the Lord Bishop of Ely, Dr L J White-Thompson. The green was extended to six rinks in 1933 with a new hut to replace the
old pavilion.

In 1968 a group of members discussed the possibility of building an indoor club and with financial help from various sources the plan reached fulfilment in June 1970 with the opening of The City of Ely Indoor Bowls Club.
In 1978 the indoor club was extended to it’s present six rinks and today the combined indoor and outdoor club has a thriving membership of nearly 500. This membership extends from cadets as young as 9 years to social and full members, some of whom are renowned figures in the world of bowling.

In late January the club celebrated the achievements of Greg Harlow when he won the 2010 World Indoor Singles Title defeating Scotsman Stuart Anderson in the final. Greg had previously won three consecutive International Open Titles and has previously held both the Scottish Open and Welsh Open crowns. Greg is currently ranked number two in the world
The number 1 ranked Englishman, Nicky Brett, is also a member of the club along with Commonwealth Gold medallist Ellen Falkner. Ellen is a regular England International both indoor and outdoor and in 2008, along with mother Sue Alexander and grandmother Dorothy Bowers, won the English Women’s Bowling Association National Triples title. Ellen and Sue also won the pairs title and Ellen was runner-up in the singles. Nicky recently deposed Greg Harlow as England's Champion of Champions.

Presently the Indoor Club runs competitive leagues five days a week during the day and in the evening. We play friendly matches virtually every weekend and club competitions for every form of the game.
New members are very welcome whether experienced bowlers or complete beginners.
We run classes for those who have never played and new bowlers can visit the club on a Sunday evening at 7.00 to experience the game for the first time. You need no equipment or special clothing and we will provide the bowls and coaching.

On the social side the club provides regular functions ranging from Race Nights to Quiz Nights and Discos. Our bar is open every night of the week to members and guests.
The indoor season runs from September to April and our outdoor season from May to September.
Bowls is a game which is easily learnt and understood and probably one of the only games where you can play with and against the best in the world. You may not win but at least you can say you’ve played with the best.
Bowls is very social game and the club is an ideal place to meet new friends in a comfortable environment.
Come and visit us any evening. There will always be someone at the club willing to talk and tell you all about our club and the game of bowls.
Don’t be fooled into thinking this is a game for the older generation. Most of our best players are under 40 and some of the teenagers are already playing in National Competitions.
