The Club completed the fist half of their target double at the weekend when they defeated Torquay United in the final of The Egham Trophy at Desborough Indoor Bowls Club. Although we were at full strength captain Sue Alexander expected a tough contest against a young and very talented Torquay outfit. With experience on our side it appeared that we were the more relaxed and confident team in the early stages and registered 12 shots without reply over the first few ends. Our lead was extended to 22 – 4 with Greg Harlow’s rink leading the way with a 10 – 1 scoreline. The other rinks were much closer and Nicky Brett had his hands full with Sam Tolchard whilst both Andy Easy and Jamie Reynolds enjoyed narrow leads.
The match became much closer as Torquay settled and they pulled back to within 5 shots by the completion of the eighth end. However, events were about to turn dramatically in our favour. Greg's rink was six shots down he came to the mat. A few seconds later, having played a superb shot to drive the jack into the ditch, they were two shots up. This seemed to inspire the rest of the team and shortly after Jamie Reynolds’ rink registered six shots and Andy Easy a further five. Over the next few ends a narrow lead was extended to 30 shots and with Nicky Brett managing to hold Tolchard the contest seemed to be drawing to an inevitable conclusion.
Our lead had grown to 46 shots at the conclusion of 72 ends and with 12 ends still to play Torquay decided that there was no way back and the celebrations began.
Captain Sue Alexander said, ‘this has been a wonderful season for the club already and to win The Egham Trophy for the third time is a great achievement. The team has played really well all season’.
Our men will attempt to complete the second half of the double in two weeks time at Kempston when they face Bristol in the semi-final of The Denny Cup. In the other semi-final Cyphers play Cumbria. The final will be played on the same day.
